The Challenge
A global biopharma manufacturer ships high-value, temperature-sensitive products across domestic and international markets. Their therapies require strict 2–8°C control, where even brief temperature excursions can put product integrity, compliance, and patient outcomes at risk.
Like many companies in the biologics space, the customer leaned on conservative shipping strategies, including frequent overnight services and complex packouts, to reduce risk. While effective, this approach drove up transportation costs and added operational strain as shipping volumes and global distribution needs increased.
International shipments brought additional challenges: longer transit times, customs delays, and inconsistent handling conditions. At the same time, domestic shipments still demanded speed, reliability, and repeatable performance.
The customer faced a familiar cold chain dilemma:
How do you lower freight costs and simplify operations without compromising temperature protection?
They needed a solution that could perform across multiple lanes, support more cost-effective transit options, and maintain confidence in every shipment.
The Solution
Veritiv’s sales team and Cold Chain Specialist partnered closely with the customer’s operations and quality groups to rebuild their packouts from the ground up. After evaluating current shipping lanes, packout workflows, and thermal needs, Veritiv developed two purpose-built systems:
One optimized for domestic distribution
One tailored for international export lanes
Each design functioned as a turnkey solution, integrating the shipper, gel packs, and custom spacers to create a more streamlined and consistent process. This reduced complexity, standardized handling, and ensured repeatable thermal performance across all lanes.
The Results
The redesigned system delivered clear technical and financial improvements:
-
Reliable thermal performance: Maintained 2–8°C for 48 hours across domestic and export routes.
-
Lower freight costs: Optimized packouts allowed the customer to eliminate overnight shipments. A $100,000 cost savings.
-
Simplified packouts: Integrated components made the packing process faster and more consistent.
-
Better end-customer experience: The final recipients benefited from an easier, cleaner unpacking process.
The customer gained a solution that protected product integrity, reduced costs, and streamlined operations across multiple shipping scenarios.
